SPORT, A TOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT

Beyond the physical well-being, sport can play an important role for a safer, more prosperous and more peaceful society, through its educational values and worldwide network. Although the beneficial effects of sport for development are still not exploited to their full extent, sport can help bridge cultural and ethnic divides, create jobs and businesses, promote tolerance and non-discrimination, reinforce social integration, and advocate healthy lifestyles. Through sports development, we can achieve wider human development goals.

IOC'S SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The sports movement, which is an integral part of society, is both affected and concerned by its main social and economic issues and contributes to this global effort through its main field of expertise: sport.

"More than ever, sport is a universal language and plays the role of catalyst in today's society as a means of improving quality of life and well-being." Jacques Rogge, IOC President

PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES

The IOC has developed a comprehensive programme using sports development as a tool for local socio-economic development and for humanitarian assistance; it implements and supports numerous projects at field level, in cooperation with development and humanitarian aid specialised organizations and National Olympic Committees, to improve the lives of under-privileged communities worldwide.
